Water softeners use an ion exchange process to remove calcium and magnesium—the minerals that make water "hard." As water passes through the softener's resin bed, these minerals are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions.
The system periodically regenerates by flushing the resin with a salt solution, washing away the collected minerals and recharging the resin for continued softening.
